It rained all day today so I pulled out my scarves from my bar trip to do this shoot. I chose this pink one to contrast the blue of my shirt, and to match my pink rainboots! I had my brother stand under the porch the whole time while I stood out in the rain. Priorities! Camera stays less wet than me always!
During the day, my news ticker showed that Steve Jobs had passed, and I was deeply saddened that such a great man had so little time on this earth. One of my favorite quotes from his commencement speech at Standford stands out in my mind today, and I hope that his message will continue to inspire generations to come.
“If today is the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? If the answer is no for too many days in a row, I know I have to change something. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. Stay hungry, stay foolish.” – Steve Jobs

Travel isn’t always pretty, or comfortable. Sometimes i hurts, breaks your heart even. But it’s ok. It changes you. It should change you. It leaves mark on your memory, your heart, your consciousness, and even on your body. You take something with you, and hopefully, you leave something good behind. Where to next? Your guess is as good as mine.”

you are asleep beside me, and despite the deep rumbles and grating gears of the passing vehicles on the highway outside our window, I feel so content, listening to your breathing, and the wind in the tall backyard tree, and now it is silent of all cars and trucks and roadnoise, and now it is nicer than it was before. with you I have learnt the most about myself, and consequently the world, and with you I am calmest, clearest, happiest, realest, warmest, and all other superlatives that could be used to describe just how right things are with you. I have said it a few times but I’m not sure I’ve ever truly been able to express just how much I appreciate you, your presence in my life, all of the things I have learnt from you both directly and indirectly. the world will change and change often, sometimes dramatically, but I know our love will always remain. we are the strongest of the strong, and I will never leave your side.
thank you for all that you have blessed me with. i am indebted to you.
yours for all time, and timelessness,
m

I prefer to travel by ground rather than flight because I get to enjoy the scenery and the local life, although they take about 10x as long to arrive to my destination. Half the fun and experience is how I get there! There has not been one completely smooth transaction in how we travel from one location to another since we landed in Southeast Asia… and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If something goes exactly according to plan, we are so incredibly thankful for it, and I find that amusing since a tiny little thing like arrival time in the US would have caused a gigantic hoopla about false advertising. Here, I lightly brush it off as something that is bound to happen, and i just add about 2-3 hours to the estimated given time. I have learned humility, patience, and understanding of the harsh culture that surrounds me, and I hold that dear to my personal growth.
We have been up since 6 am today. I’m sitting on the 3rd bus of the day going from Siem Reap to Bangkok. It’s been an 8 hour ride with stop and go traffic and intermission at the border in Cambodia and then again in Thailand. We took a minibus to the border of Cambodia because our bus overbooked (of course it did!) We are traveling with about 20 other backpackers like us and we were all collectively confused as to the actual arrival time, where to go after each border crossing and where to stay for the night. I love seeing them in one place, splitting up to go our separate ways and then randomly meeting again later in another destination to catch up on what we did in the last leg. We have a small group we met on a bus to Phnom Penh that is going on our same route until Bangkok (same same but different!!!! *_*)

Today, I woke up and went to class. I didn’t pull out my outlines. I picked up the essays and started writing instead of typing. It made me feel better so I’ll do another essay tonight. But for now, I’ll watch a lecture…in this outfit to start of independence day weekend….because that’s about all I can do to celebrate it.
